Glitch City – The Glimmers

1 - 10 March 2024, CCAS Manuka

Glitch City - The Glimmers is an exhibition of paintings that continues in the tradition of abstract painting. Predominantly painted in black, greys and whites, these works attempt to rationalize the dark strangeness that has been the psychological, social and digital environments of the last 4-5 years for many people.

Looking at any screen-based technologies, we all find ourselves occasionally bearing witness to glitches, errors and disruptions to intent of our engagement. As a consequence, frustrations and anxieties can arise.

As life pans out for us all, and as we observe our lives while encountering these societal glitches on a personal, community, national and global level, we are pushed into situations where we need to develop our skills to build resilience or to adopt coping strategies to help pull us through these times of adversity.

Using the motif of the screen glitch as a simple metaphor for life going wrong, I am using a backdrop of complicated and dark patterning. Out of this mass of confusion, out of this darkness arises “The Glimmers”. The glimmers are represented with bright fluorescent colours that emerge and float above the darkness

These are the good bits. These are the moments of joy, happiness, bright saturated colour. These are the moments and places where our focus can linger to help pull us up and forward. Where we can find beauty and growth, and allow ourselves to love and let love in. These are the parts that sparkle and lift our hearts. These are the lights that show us the way.
