ALLISON BARNES
LISA WILMOT

11 - 21 August 2022 @ CCAS MANUKA

In Translations, recent graduates from the ANU School of Art and Design, Lisa Wilmot and Allison Barnes look outwards to the broader world investigating collectively the natural environment, the impact of global warming, and specific moments experienced.  Their abstract works - paintings, mixed media and installations - take an image of the directly observed environment, an object or a literary or artistic work and translate it to something less direct to explore a sensory moment or the implications of climate change.  Each series of works explores an individual approach to technique, colour or materials.

Using bold and engaging colours and irregular and uneven lines Lisa’s acrylic paintings attract and sustain attention to convey something directly observed – the effect of sunlight, a mood or emotion or the changing time of day.  Allison’s mixed media works on paper reference the 1982 science fiction novel, The Making of a Representative for Planet 8 by Doris Lessing, as a framework to think about climate catastrophe. Other works take found objects or the work of other artists as a starting point.
