OFF THE LOOM

ROSIE ARMSTRONG
KATE RICE
curated by POPPY THOMSON

3 - 12 February 2023, CCAS MANUKA

Off the Loom is an exhibition true to its title. Emerging textiles artists Rosie Armstrong and Kate Rice have taken their practice off the loom and into new, experimental realms. Both recent graduates of the ANU School of Art & Design, Armstrong and Rice explore weaving as a foundation for sculptural pieces. In this form, negative space acquires equal authority to physical patterns. Light and shadow weave through fabric and wire, challenging where the works begin and end, a concept furthered through their encouragement of audience participation. Indeed, Off the Loom is an exhibition about agency. As viewers are encouraged to manipulate the patterns of light cast by the works using torches, they are invited to consider their agency within the work, sparking broader questions about their agency at large.

Poppy Thomson is an emerging curator who completed an internship with CCAS in 2022. Off the Loomis the culmination of Poppy's time at CCAS.
