Burnout 2004 is a spectacular cross-subcultural event the likes of which has never been seen in Canberra.
Contemporary art fans, stunt and speedway enthusiasts will be drawn together in a single event that collapses the normal divide between sport, street machine cultures and high art.
Burnout 2004 involves street cars spinning tires in a choreographed burnout session, culminating in a huge indelible rubber abstract drawing on a bitumen canvas. Each drawing will be documented by overhead cameras which transmit the images via digital link-up to an onsite computer. These prints will be distributed to the audience, who will watch the event via grandstand seating. This free artwork acknowledges the audiences important role in the event.
Burnout 2004 is not intended for the exclusive patronage of the art fraternity. The aim of this activity is to introduce to a wide audience an interpretation of art that may demonstrate a new way of appreciation.
