In her series, Return to Tarban Creek, Paula Bollers creates photographic narratives inspired and situated on the historical of the site of Gladesville Hospital of the Mentally Insane (formerly known as Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum) in New South Wales. Part of Bollers’ larger investigation of the individual’s navigation through new suburban landscape, Return to Tarban Creek, reactivates spaces that are no longer inhabited. Lone individuals roam through the empty buildings and along the isolated beach and oval of the old institution. Bollers’ photographs bear witness to the demise of one historical institution as another rises in its wake.
