Malcolm Utley presents sculpture and paintings of abstract mode, with an underlying concept of the 'body'. Previously, Utley's abstract art focussed on the "body" as a loci of knowledge with its manifestation of desires and fears, sensual and disturbing organic themes, concealed and revealed through painterly veils and skin references. The change of cultural surrounds presented a radical foreign experience that led initially to an exploration of linear concepts as a form of arranging knowledge, experience and memory (coming about from getting lost on freeway road systems and also a fascination, and also a fascination with calligraphic aesthetics of Chinese, Arabic, Jawi and Hindu script). This work being the most recent has been absorbed again by the provocative aspects of the 'body', all the while maturing in both resolve and intent.
