Screening the Buddha is an installation that Clare Martin developed in response to her Vietnam residency in Hanoi in 2003. The work results from her experience of looking at Vietnamese temples without the benefit of explanatory language. The structures of the temple, in particular the multiple open-work screens and repeated images of the Buddha suggest that there is some aspect of the Buddha which is above and beyond more encompassing. The installation is concentrated on communicating structure, serenity and balance through employing a sense of translation and mimicry.
